EPA releases report on Port Hedland dust
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) today released a report recommending dust management for the Roy Hill 1 Iron Ore Project port operations in Port Hedland be regulated under a single regulatory mechanism to remove potential duplication and improve transparency and compliance.
EPA Chairman Dr Tom Hatton said the report into dust management at the Roy Hill Port Hedland port operations recommended a more consistent and modern approach to the regulation of dust emissions and discharges.
“The management of dust emissions at Port Hedland is a significant environmental issue and it is important the appropriate regulatory process is in place to effectively manage and enforce the regulations,” Dr Hatton said.
“We are recommending that the regulation of dust at Roy Hill’s Port Hedland operations is best carried out using a contemporary Part V licence rather than a condition in a Ministerial Statement, as this makes the regulation more adaptable to change and more clearly enforceable by DWER.
“It makes sense to have a sole regulatory mechanism to manage dust in Port Hedland to remove potential duplication and ensure dust emissions are managed in a more modern and transparent manner.”
The recommendations are a result of the EPA’s inquiry on changing the operating conditions for Roy Hill’s operations in Port Hedland.
