The proposal is for broad-scale use of bauxite residue as a soil amendment for existing agricultural and horticultural properties. The Department of Agriculture expects bauxite residue application rates to range from 20 to 100 tonnes per hectare (t/ha) for pasture and up to 250 t/ha for horticultural uses. The proposal is to develop the site of an old fertilizer works in McCabe Street Mosman Park for residential purposes. The site had been used from 1910 to 1969 primarily as a fertilizer manufacturing works. Since the early seventies the site has not been actively used. Rutherford Resources Pty Ltd proposes to develop a gold deposit in 'C' Class Nature Reserve No 18584 near Westonia, halfway between Southern Cross and Merredin in the eastern wheatbelt. The reserve has important conservation value due to the small area of land set aside for nature conservation in the wheatbelt. Mining is a potentially acceptable land use in 'C' Class Nature reserves under Government Policy if a proposal is considered to be environmentally acceptable. In March 1988 the Health Department of Western Australia, the proponent, requested that the waste receival time on Saturday at the Westfield Treatment Plant be changed from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon to 7am to 4.00pm. During its assessment of this request (EPA Bulletin 348) the EPA, after consulting with the City of Armadale and other decision making authorities, found the change acceptable.
