Proposal description

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited (a wholly -owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto) proposes the development of a major iron ore mining operation in the central Pilbara region of Western Australia. The development will be centered around its Koodaideri deposits, located 110 kilometres west-north-west of Newman.

The Proposal will involve the construction and operation of a greenfields mine and associated infrastructure. Mining will consist of open pits and supporting infrastructure, including a 167 kilometre railway connecting into the main network operated by Rio Tinto’s iron ore business. The mine may produce up to 70 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a) of ore and the expected operational mine life is approximately 30 years.

Changes:

  • Change the size of the Southern Infrastructure Corridor (SIC) development envelope from 12,003 ha to 5,465 ha. This involves:
  • Reduction of the Southern Infrastructure Corridor development envelope by 6,668 hectares (ha).
  • Addition of 130 ha to the Southern Infrastructure Corridor development envelope for the re-alignment of the power line and maintenance track.
  • Update Figures 1, 2 and 5 and geographic coordinates as defined in Table 2 of Schedule 2.

Change to conditions approved under S45C on 6 September 2017.

Attachment 2 to Statement 999 - Amendment to condition 14-2, approved under S46C on 4 January 2021.

Attachment 3 to Statement 999 - Changes:
•Increase the extent of the Southern Infrastructure Corridor development envelope from 5,465 ha to 6,122 ha to facilitate the construction and operation of a water transfer pipeline for ongoing mining operations.
•Increase in the extent of vegetation clearing within the amended Southern Infrastructure Corridor development envelope from 246 ha to 384 ha.
•Southern Infrastructure Corridor development envelope activities to include the construction and operation of a water transfer pipeline and associated infrastructure.
•Update Figure 1 and geographic coordinates as defined in Table 2 of Schedule 2. Changes approved under s. 45C on 7 March 2024.
