This proposal involves two types of operation, a resource extraction stage and a product generating phase. The proposal is to mine peat from within the Lake Muir Nature Reserve, east of Manjimup, and to process the material into a range of carbon and other products. The proposal is to construct and operate a sodium cyanide plant at Kwinana. The plant would have the capacity to produce 45,000 tonnes of solid sodium cyanide briquettes annually. Alcoa of Australia Pty Ltd has been operating the Wagerup Refinery (Stage 1) near Waroona (100 km south of Perth) since 1984, under the Alumina Refinery (Wagerup) Agreement and Acts Amendment No 15 of 1978. This agreement covers a production capacity up to 2 mtpa (million tonnes per annum). AMC Mineral Sands Ltd, the mineral sands division of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited, proposes to expand its synthetic rutile plant on the Narngulu Industrial Estate located 11 km south-east of Geraldton. After expansion, the synthetic rutile plant will occupy some 47 hectares of the 465 hectare Estate. The expansion will increase synthetic rutile production from 112,500 to 260,000 tonnes per annum.
